Description:

Fascinating set of original Reuters wires service telexes carrying updates on the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley Jr. on March 30, 1981. The first report in the set occurs at 2:37 PM, Eastern Standard Time, ten minutes after Hinckley emptied his Rohm .22 revolver at the President. It opens with the headline "GUNSHOTS FIRED AT REAGAN", and describes the Secret Service shoving Reagan into his limousine to escape the scene. The initial reports go on to state that Reagan was not hit, although press secretary James Brady is reported as wounded and rushed to George Washington University Hospital at 2:51. The first indication that Reagan was struck by a bullet comes at 3:14, with the headline "REAGAN WOUNDED IN SHOOTING", continuing: "...President Reagan was shot in the chest during the attempt on his life and his condition is 'stable'..." Updates continue throughout the day, punctuated by other breaking news items and stock market reports, although trading is halted in several markets as news of the shooting breaks. Hickley is first identified at 3:36, and Brady is erroneously reported as having died at 5:11. The final report of the set comes at 6:19, as Reagan continues to undergo surgery to remove the bullet lodged in his left side, with his condition being described as "Good". The set is divided into eight 6" wide "strips", and shows even toning overall, else very good.
