Description:

'RESPONSA FROM THE HOLOCAUST'
Excessively rare book: 'Responsa From the Holocaust' by Rabbo Ephraim Oshry (New York: Judaica Press), 1983. 228pp. 8vo. in black cloth with gold titles. Very fine, with dust jacket which ahs a few edge tears and a water stain along the spine. In this breathtakingly moving book, Rabbi Oshry documents the remarkable continuity of religious life under the horrendous conditions of Nazi-occupied Lithuania. The Jews of the Kovno Ghetto went to Rabbi Oshry, one of the remaining religious authorities in the ghetto, and posed their questions to him. He answered their questions and recorded each and every query by copying it onto paper that he tore from cement sacks. He then buried these scraps of papers in cans in the soil around the ghetto. After the war, Rabbi Oshry unearthed the hidden cans, and then painstakingly reviewed each and every question with Torah texts, as his original answers were based solely on memory. Once properly researched, he then compiled a five-volume work in Hebrew of the responses, titled Shaalot U'Teshuvot Mimaamakim ('Questions and Answers From the Depths'). This was later translated into a one-volume work titled 'Responsa From the Holocaust'. This 1983 edition is especially rare.
