Description:

REPORT ON THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS NAVY
A great content official copy of a report from a session of the 29th Congress given by Senator Reverdy Johnson of Maryland, 4pp. 8vo., Washington D.C., February 5, 1847, reporting the status of the agreement between a U.S. citizen and the navy he built for the newly annexed Republic of Texas. In part: '...The Committee of Claims...report...that they have duly examined the statements present...and find that in the year 1838 the memorialists jointly contracted in the name of Frederick Dawson, with the authorized agents of the Republic of Texas, to furnish said republic with a navy...These vessels were built, furnished, and equipped...then delivered by the memorialists at the port of Galveston...the contract which the committee have thus described was made and fulfilled at a very critical juncture in the history of Texas...in view of all these facts, and after careful and deliberate examination of the case, the committee have agreed to recommend the speedy settlement of the claim of the memorialists and for that purpose report the accompanying bill...' Slightly toned with the pages partly detached, else good. On November 13, 1838, officials in the Republic of Texas made a contract with Frederick Dawson of Baltimore to build six vessels for their navy. As stated, they were built and delivered yet the balance of the contract was never paid due to Texas' already steep debts. This claim was filed after Texas was annexed by the United States as Dawson and his colleagues came looking for their money. Johnson's report states the Senate understands why Texas officials were unable to pay the debt, and since they have been cooperative in turning over all their assets, including the ships, to the government they will undertake to settle the debt. Very good.
