A good group of six pieces including WILLIAM CORDELL (1522-1581) Solicitor General and Master of the Rolls to Mary I and Speaker of the House of Commons during the reign of Elizabeth I. Fine content A.L.S. as Speaker 1p. oblong 4to., [n.p., prob. Westminster] Oct. 8, 1558, to an unidentified recipient discussing the death of his daughter: "...Sickness of my little girl has so troubled me that I have had no mynde of any thing... the last night God hath called her oute of his lyffe to his Mercy. I muste humblie thank almighty God..."; JOHN FORTESCUE OF SALDEN (c. 1531 - 1607) Chancellor of the Exchequer (1589 - 1603). Manuscript D.S. "Fortescue" as Chancellor of the Exchequer 1p. 4to., [n.p., prob. Westminster], July 3, 1597, in part: "...Bennet Blumfielde one of ye messengers of your Majesty's exchequer asketh allowance for ridinge in haste at ye command of ye Right Honorable Sr. John Fortescue knight from his house at ye wardrobe in London to Mr. [?] to his house at Ware... for her Majesty's service and so returned againe to his house at London..."; ROBERT WALPOLE (1676 - 1745) D.S. on a small slip removed from a larger document; ROBERT PEEL (1788 - 1850), franking signature on an address panel accomplished in his hand with Feb. 13, 1835 postmark; SIDNEY GODOLPHIN (1645 - 1712) Partly-printed D.S. 1p. legal folio, [Westminster], Feb. 11, 1705, an order "in Pursuance of a late Act of Parliament... An act for granting an Aid to Her Majesty by a Land-Tax...That you deliver and pay of such Her Majesty's Treasure as remains in your Charge"; JOHN FORSYTH manuscript D.S. 1p. on a 12" x 1 1/4" slip, [n.p., nd.]. Together six pieces with marginal wear including chips and minor tears, usual folds, overall very good condition.
