Description:

RELICS OF GERMAN AIRCRAFT SHOT DOWN ON LAST DAY OF THE WAR
A great de-accessed display from what we believe was a small collection, or perhaps a museum, two sections of fabric from the fuselages of German aircraft shot down on the last full day of World War I, November 10, 1918. The hand-lettered display measures 8.5 x 6.5 in. overall and bears a hand-inked caption: 'GIFT FROM DR. J. L. ZEMMONS FRAGMENTS FROM FUSELAGE OF GERMAN PLANES SHOT DOWN NOV. 10-1918 IN FRANCE. LETTERED NOTATIONS MADE AT THE TIME' Both pieces are tacked with brown thread to the white backing. The first piece has a faded camouflage pattern, 3.25 x 4.5 in., and is inscribed: 'Taken from a Boche [?] brought down Sunday 3:00 PM Nov. 10, 1918 Near [?] France...' The second piece is 3.25 x 2.75 in., also a camouflage pattern, and it reads: 'Taken off a Boche Aeroplane brought down. Sunday 1:30 PM 11-10-18 H.H.S.' Both pieces bear museum identification numbers in the corners beside the cloth relics. As mentioned the paint on the canvas has faded, as have the ink attributions which still remain almost entirely legible.
