RELIC OF THE APPOMATTOX COURT HOUSE
A great Civil War relic, a shingle from the roof of the Appomattox Court House in which Gen. Robert E. Lee signed the Articles of Surrender on April 9, 1865. The rough-hewn shingle measures 18 1/2" long x 4" wide, and to which is affixed a period note of provenance from HENRY T. PARRISH, Judge of the Court House, in full: "I hereby certify that the shingle delivered by J. J. Rogland to J. Coolidge on December 8th 1888 is from the roof of the house at Appomattox C.H. Virginia in which General Robert E. Lee on the 9th of April 1865 signed the Articles of Surrender and delivered the same to General U. S. Grant and that it formed a portion of the said house at the time of the surrender. Henry T. Parrish Judge Appomattox County Court ". Very good, from the collection of John Lattimer.
