German infantry general of World War I awarded the Pour le Mérite for his incredible escape from certain capture. Completely encircled by a vastly superior Russian force at Lodz, von Scheffer's corps not only broke out but was able to capture 16,000 Russian prisoners, 64 field pieces and 39 machine guns. War-date S.P. 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" matted to 6" x 8" sepia, a three-quarter length pose in uniform, boldly signed and dated 1917 at bottom. Fine.
