Description:

REINHARD HEYDRICH
(1904 - 1942) 'The Hangman', Nazi head of the dreaded SS and architect of the 'Final Solution', his assassination in Prague caused in retribution the destruction of Lidice and murder of many of its inhabitants. Fine content T.L.S. on his stamped official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, Mar. 10, 1938, to the Personnel Staff of the SS. Heydrich discusses the loyalty of important Sudetenland propagandist and ideologue KARL VIERERBL (1903-1945), an SS officer and contributor to the paper 'Das Schwarzen Korps', among others. He later became head of all press in the Sudetenland. Heydrich cautions: '...The following became known about Viererbl: 'Viererbl did not always take a clear stance in the ideological conflict in Sudeten Germany between the National Socialists and the KB-clique [Kameradschaftsbund, a Volkisch group seeking Sudeten independence]. At first, he was clearly on the side of the old National Socialists and apparently at the moment he believed that if the Reich's decision were to be in favor of the opposing side, it would conspicuously swing over to this side.' The use of the Dr. Viererbl for the security service is currently being circulated as not advisable, but there are no objections to its inclusion. However, his physical and health suitability for the 4th [military] grade still needs to be checked...'. Some offsetting of dockets at the top and bottom hardly detract, file holes at the blank left margin. Heydrich's report likely ensured the fact that Viererbl would not be promoted beyond the level of Sturmbannfuhrer. Viererbl would die a prisoner of the Soviets.
