Description:

REINDEER SHANK MUKLUKS FROM THE 1928 BYRD ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION
An interesting exploration relic, reindeer shank mukluks made by Eskimos at Norton Sound, Alaska, and apparently worn by Arthur T. Walden, the lead dog driver on Byrd's famed first Antarctic Expedition in 1928. Walden (1871-1947) was an enthusiastic participant in the Klondike Gold Rush, during which he learned to drive a dog team. He, with 97 dogs, was called upon to haul supplies to Byrd's camp "Little America" in Sept. 1928. He later authored several books, the most famous of which is A Dog-Puncher on the Yukon. The boots are 16" tall with leather soles and a leather drawstring top to secure them tightly around the leg. Very good condition, with two period notes identifying the boots as belonging to Walden.
