Description:

REICHSARBEITSDIENST SHOULDER BOARDS
Especially rare pair of shoulder boards, each 1 1/2" x 4 3/4", with a knotted design of alternating gold and silver cords with black accents on a black velvet backing. Each shoulder board also bears a silver badge depicting the insignia of the Reichsarbeitsfuhrer (Head of the German Labor Service), a wreath consisting of oak and laurel leaves, surrounding a swastika-emblazoned shovel blade with wheat ears, the whole surmounted by a national eagle. The two shoulder boards are connected by a silver cord, secured with a metal seal marked "Reichs Arbeits Dienst", and further bears a partial paper tag from the R.A.D. Procurement Office, dated May 18, 1937. This style of shoulder board was later adopted as the rank insignia of Reichsarbeitsfuhrer KONSTANTIN HIERL (1875-1955), beginning in May of 1942. It is likely that these shoulder boards were intended to be samples or demonstration items, and they are in fine unissued condition.
