Description:

REICH MINISTRY OF AVIATION AND "HOUSE OF AVIATORS" DESIGN PROPOSAL PRINTS
Excellent set of three original architectural prints, each depicting proposed designs for elements of the Berlin headquarters of the "Reichsluftfahrtministerium" ("Reich Ministry of Aviation"), or RLM, and the adjacent "Haus der Flieger" ("House of Aviators"). Includes: Architectural exterior elevation detail prints, 72" x 39 1/2", depicting a portion of the facade of the RLM headquarters. The print shows several large windows, two capped by stone national eagle and swastika carvings. The recto of the print bears no text, but the verso bears a pencil inscription labeling the building as the "Ehrensaal" ("honor hall"), with the scale "M[asstaab] 1:50", and the warning "Nicht Wegwerfen" ("Do Not Discard"), with a note that it has been submitted for approval. The print shows a 5" tear at the top edge, with six approx. 3/4" holes scattered throughout, with some chips to the edges, else very good. Interestingly, we can find no period photographs indicating that national eagle carvings were installed over any exterior windows in the manner shown in this schematic, although such symbols were well-represented elsewhere on the facade. WITH: Architectural interior elevation print, 51" x 37", depicting the lobby of the "Haus der Flieger", immediately adjacent to the RLM. The print shows the interior of the lobby entrance, consisting of three arches flanked by two full-length stone friezes, the imagery of which is unfortunately indistinct. The image is titled "Das Haus Der Flieger" at top, with the caption "Wandelhalle. Sauleigangswand. Neuer Zustand Im Masstaab 1:50" ("Foyer, Entrance Wall, New Condition in Scale 1:50"). At lower right appears the place of printing, Berlin, with a space for the date left blank. Shows one or two small tears to the edges, else very good. WITH: Architectural interior elevation print, 51" x 37", depicting the lobby of the "Haus der Flieger", immediately adjacent to the RLM. The print depicts the wall opposite the entrance, consisting of five arches interspersed with free-standing sconces. he image is titled "Das Haus Der Flieger" at top, with the caption "Wandelhalle. Treppenhauswand. Neuer Masstaab Im 1:50" ("Foyer, Staircase Wall. New Condition in Scale 1:50"). At lower right appears the place of printing, Berlin, with a space for the date left blank. Very good. Three pieces. The RLM building, located on the Wilhelmstrasse in central Berlin, was constructed between February 1935 and August 1936, following a design by Ernst Sagebiel, who completed numerous other projects for the Luftwaffe, including the modernization of Tempelhof Airport. It was one of the few public buildings in Berlin to escape serious damage during World War II, and its ceremonial hall hosted the founding of the German Democratic Republic, which utilized it as a governmental center. The building is now known as the "Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus". The "Haus der Flieger", immediately adjacent to the RLM building on the Leipziger Strasse, was built in 1904 as the seat of the Prussian House of Lords, but was annexed to the RLM buolding in 1935 as was renovated under the order of Hermann Goering for use as a reception hall and office building. In this latter capacity, it held offices utilized by the Reich Main Security Office, headed by Reinhard Heydrich. The building is currently the seat of the German "Bundesrat".
