Description:

REICH CHANCELLERY WORKERS' GIFT PLAQUE AND CASH GIFT
Scarce complete gift intended to be given to one of the 4,000 workers who toiled ceaselessly to construct Hitler's new Reich Chancellery in 1938-39. Included is a black iron plaque, 10 1/2" x 5 3/8", bears a bust of Adolf Hitler above a national eagle and swastika. Inscription beneath reads: "In commemoration of the completion of the Reich Chancellery commenced March, 1938 until today, dedicated to the workers. Berlin, January 9, 1939". Also present is a printed (uncompleted) form thanking a worker for completing the construction ahead of schedule, gifting the recipient fifty Reichsmark, bearing a facsimile signature of Albert Speer, Jan. 9, 1939, along with the original fifty Reichsmark note. Finally, the red faux leather presentation case with gold embossed eagle and swastika is present, though a bit battered with a few holes and worn. In late January 1938, Adolf Hitler officially assigned his favorite architect Albert Speer to build the New Reich Chancellery. Hitler commented that Bismarck's Old Chancellery was "fit for a soap company" but not suitable as headquarters of a Greater German Reich. In the end it cost over 90 million Reichsmark, well over one billion dollars today. The location is now a parking lot.
