Description:

RED GUARD ARMBANDS
Lot of four red cloth armbands, measuring between 3" x 6" (joined at the ends) and 6 1/2" x 18 1/2" (unjoined), with the smallest being a child's size. Each armband is printed with Chinese characters in white or yellow, and one bears an image of Mao Zedong. These were worn by the Red Guards, a mass paramilitary social movement, mostly comprised of students, who were mobilized by Mao during the Cultural Revolution to enforce the denouncement and erasure of pre-revolution Chinese culture with that of the Communist Party of China. All bear minor soiling, with one showing further faint ink inscriptions in Chinese and rubber stamps, else very good. From a single collection obtained entirely in China pre-2000.
