RECRUITING BROADSIDE FOR SHUTE'S NEW JERSEY REGIMENT (REPRODUCTION)
A reproduction broadside, 21.5 x 17 in., advertising the recruitment of men in Spotswood, Middlesex ‘…in Major Shute's Battalion of the 11th regiment infantry, commanded by Lieutenant, for the purpose of receiving the enrollment of such youth of SPIRIT...The ENCOURAGEMENT at this time…a bounty of twelve dollars…'. Major Samuel M. Shute (1763-1816) rose in the ranks of the 2nd New Jersey Regiment, become a first lieutenant in 1780. The 2nd New Jersey participated in many important engagements during the war, including Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth and Yorktown, where they aided in the capture of Redoubt Number 10. Aaron Ogden (1756-1839) was an American Revolutionary officer who captured a British supply ship and delivered Washington's proposal to exchange Andre for Arnold, later active in the steamship trade and fifth governor of New Jersey. Linen-backed for preservation, a central fold and light offsetting at center, overall very good.
