Description:

RECOGNITION MODELS OF GERMAN, RUSSIAN, AND JAPANESE WARSHIPS
Good lot of 26 cast metal models, all between 2 1/2" and 8 1/2" long, depicting one German, 12 Japanese, and 13 Russian warships of the World War II era. Russian ships presented here include: five destroyers of the LENINGRAD class; two cruisers of the KIROV class; and six unknown destroyers, representing three classes. the Japanese ships present include: the aircraft carrier TAIHO; a KATORI-class cruiser; a MUTSUKI-class destroyer; two WATAKE-class destroyers; a MINEKAZE-class destroyer; a MATSU-class destroyer; two OTORI-class patrol ships; and three unidentified ships, two cruisers and a destroyer. Also present is the German World War I battlecruiser Derfflinger. Many of the models are missing some or all of their soft metal masts, and the two Kirov-class cruisers are missing all of their gun turrets. These models were frequently used to train sailors and aviators to distinguish friendly ships from enemy vessels, although many postwar models of the same design and construction were also produced. Based on the level of detail present in these examples, it is our belief that they are mostly World War II-era recognition models.
