Description:

Good content Union soldier's letter, 4pp. legal folio "Camp on the Weldon Rail Road", Jan. 11, 1865. Cpl. Austin Fenn of the 10th Vermont Vols. writes his wife a lengthy letter, opening it with a description of his makeshift desk and asking for certain provisions and other necessities. He adds: "...we are close to the Rebel pickets...the rebels have attacked our pickets twice in the night, and we captured some prisoners, and carried off a lot of knapsacks and blankets and rations...the get up within 8 or 10 rods in the dark concealed by bushes, then fired a volley that sounded like a hundred big maples coming down together, then came down running and screaming onto 7 or 8 forts at once...our men...scattered and run like the Devil...fell back...waiting for the Johnnies to come in and take rations and clothes...they got deceived, the Johnnies had on our overcoats...the rebs trotted off with 30 haversacks...the rebs are mighty hard up when they run such a risk..." He writes of peace rumors and negotiations, and lists some of the high prices soldiers are obliged to pay sutlers. Fenn also describes the construction of breastworks and installation of abatis. Much more in this detailed letter. Very good.
