Description:

REBELS EVACUATE YORKTOWN WHILE
A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William Reese [DOD, Aug. 25, 62], Co. B, 103rd Penn. Vols., [n.p., Yorktown, Va.], May 4, 1862. In part: "…the regiment has gone a few miles from camp…the rebels has left all their batteries along our lines. They have left Yorktown. [Col Samuel W.] Blacks regiment [62nd Penn. Vols.] was the first in the place. They are following the rebels. There was very heavy firing in the direction of Yorktown last night. It was a few rebels firing a few mortars so that our men should not suspect their retreat. Our men were making great preparations to attack but we have been saved the trouble of killing them…it would be better for us to have marched on them and defeated them. They thought that we could not take the place…but when they saw our cannons they thought that they would better leave…they begun their retreat on the 2nd but we did not know it till today…now our flag is waving on the heights of Yorktown…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Very good.
