Description:

(1877 – 1918) U.S. Army officer, the first high-ranking officer of the Army to be killed in combat in World War I. Sent to France to lay a foundation for the Air Service of the A.E.F. as head of what became known as the "Bolling Mission," he served briefly in a number of staff positions and was selected for a future combat command. He was touring his future area of operations when he was killed in action by German troops during the opening days of the 1918 spring offensive. Rare T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 3pp. 4to., New York, Apr. 17, 1918 to the Aero Club of America. In small part: "...I am very greatly obliged...for the Curtiss motor for the Thomas machine [airplane], and your agreement to pay the additional price...one of my men desires to avail himself of your offer to train members of the militia at Newport News..." Bolling also mentions the names of two other men in his detachment seeking training, Donald G. Frost and D. Raymond Noyes. A few short repaired splits on last page, else very good.
