Description:

RARE MILITARY ACADEMY LETTERHEAD, WITH JAMES CHESNUT DOCKET
Interesting content letter from Superintendent J. B. THOMAS on very rare "Superintendent's Office Arsenal Academy" letterhead, Columbia, Feb. 22, 1862, 3pp., 4to., to future CSA Gen. JAMES CHESNUT. Thomas sets forth a very exacting description of bluffs along a river and near 6"Congance[?] Bridge", setting forth explicit details on elevations, locations to place artillery and riflemen, etc. Clearly this was a plan made to defend a specific place. On verso Chesnut dockets the letter: "Report Captain Thomas. Arsenal Academy, on point of defense below Congance Brdg. 22d Feby 1862". Adversity ink a tad light in places, else good. Arsenal Academy was one of two South Carolina military schools (the other school being the Citadel). Initially established in 1842, it operated until 1863. The majority of the buildings were destroyed on 17 Feb 1865 when General William T. Sherman's troops burned down most of Columbia. The single remaining building, an 1855 officer's quarters, is now the Governor's Mansion.
