Description:

(1912 – disappeared 17 January 1945) Swedish businessman, diplomat, and humanitarian who saved tens of thousands of Jews in German-occupied Hungary from German Nazis and Hungarian Fascists during the later stages of World War II. While serving as Sweden's special envoy in Budapest between July and December 1944, Wallenberg issued protective passports and sheltered Jews in buildings designated as Swedish territory. On 17 January 1945, during the Siege of Budapest by the Red Army, Wallenberg was detained by SMERSH on suspicion of espionage and subsequently disappeared. 'RELEASE HIM...FROM THE OBLIGATION OF WEARING THE YELLOW STAR...' Outstanding, excessively rare war-date T.L.S. 'R. Wallenberg' as Secretary of the Royal Swedish Embassy, 1p. 4to., Budapest, Aug. 31, 1944 to (in German) the Hungarian National Central Alien Control Office in Budapest. The text of the letter, in Swedish, reads in part: '...We have the pleasure to inform you that the Royal Swedish Embassy in Budapest has issued a protective passport for Mr./Mrs. Jeno Radvanyi who thus is to be considered a Swedish citizen. The Embassy kindly requests that you release him/her from the obligation of wearing the Yellow Star...' With embassy seal at bottom, boldly signed. Lightly toned, a tiny bit of restoration in bottom margin, else fine. Wallenberg letters, especially with such relevant content, are impossibly rare!
