Description:

RANDOLPH B. MARCY
(1812 - 1887) Union army officer, noted for his frontier guidebook, the Prairie Traveler (1859), based on his own extensive experience of pioneering in the west. This publication became a key handbook for the thousands of Americans wanting to cross the continent. In the Civil War, Marcy became chief of staff to his son-in-law George B. McClellan, and was later appointed Inspector General of the U.S. Army. Good content A.L.S. as Inspector General, 4pp. 4to., New York, Nov. 29, 1866 to ADAM BADEAU (1831 - 1895), Union Army officer and diplomat who served on Grant's staff and assisted Grant in drafting his memoirs. Marcy reiterates orders he had received to review records of the Army of the Potomac and states that he could find none of McClellan's records as general in chief at Meade's headquarters. He briefly describes some related papers in his possession, but notes that documents specific to communications between Halleck and McClellan in February and March, 1862 are not to be found. It also appears McClellan himself desired that any such documents be sent to Washington for inclusion in the Official Records. Expertly inlaid, fine condition. During the war, McClellan characterized Halleck as 'the most hopelessly stupid of all men in high position'. This likely arose from McClellan being sacked for incompetence on March 11, 1862 in favor of Halleck as General-in-Chief in July, 1862 - he no doubt blamed Halleck in part for his dismissal.
