Description:

RANDALL LEE GIBSON
(1832 - 1892) Confederate brigadier general who led a brigade at Chickamauga and Chattanooga. He also fought under Hood at Atlanta and in Tennessee. Fine lot of 15 post-war A.L.S.'s and related correspondence by the former CSA Brigadier General, all relating to his postbellum law practice in New Orleans, the letters are one or two pages with nearly all being on his law office stationery, mostly 4to, (1870-1873), with one letter dated 1878, most accompanied by the original transmittal envelopes addressed to J. Warren Scott Dey, a New York physician, concerning ongoing real estate transactions which the two were involved in New York. In very small part: "...if we cannot get more than $5000 per annum we had better take it any time before the 1st January. We are not in a situation to go without income...I need every dollar of help I can get...I hope you will be lucky about the stores to be rented. The overwhelming & oppressive taxation here...combined to reduce the net income to a small figure...How's the feeling in the Real Estate market in New York? It has seemed to me that with the disappearance of the Ring, there would be a reaction this early spring...and in that event, we could sell the farm or make an exchange of it for desirable and productive uptown property. Perhaps also we might sell the Centre Street stores?...We hope soon to hear something favorable about the 5th Ave corner store & the Front St. stores - and that you may have offers for the Farm and Centre Street property...". Much more content worthy of further research. Very good or better.
