Description:

RANALD S. MACKENZIE
(1840 - 1889) American Army officer, described by Grant as "the most promising young officer in the army," after he distinguished himself at Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Cedar Creek. Following the Civil War, Mackenzie commanded the 24th U.S. Infantry, one of the famous "Buffalo Soldier" regiments, leading them in the Red River War and the Black Hills War. He was retired in 1884 for "General paresis of the insane" after he began to behave increasingly erratic after a fall from a wagon in Oklahoma. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., [place illeg.], Aug. 21, [n.y.] to Gen. Henry B. Clitz concerning "Lieut. George. E. Alber[?] retired, has written to me asking me for a letter of introduction to you... 'Alber' is a very old and dear friend of mine...". Usual folds with very minor partial separations at margins, some minor show-through, else fine condition.
