Description:

(1825 - 1896) French Confederate brigadier general who led brigades under Longstreet and Jackson and commanded a division at Chancellorsville. He became one of many former Confederates who were hired to fight for the Khedive of Egypt in the 1870s. Fine association A.L.S. as a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute, 1p. 4to., August 23, [n.y. but between 1843-6], to John A. Washington III (1821-1861), great-grandnephew of George Washington, last living heir to Mount Vernon who sold the property in 1858. Washington fought for the Confederacy as an aide to Robert E. Lee and was killed in action in September 1861 on a reconnaissance mission. In part: '...I am at liberty to inform you that I received a few days since a letter from Richard who declared himself in perfect health...thinking it would be gratifying to Mrs. Washington to hear this...I am compelled to hasten home, having my mother and little sister under my charge...Should you find time previous your return to Charlottesville it would be highly conducive to my happiness to see you...and have you spend some portion of it with me...' Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
