Description:

RAIN IN THE FACE
(c. 1835 - 1905) Sioux warrior who joined in the Fetterman massacre and the Battle of Honsiger Bluff for which he was later arrested by Tom Custer on orders of George A. Custer. He escaped imprisonment at Fort Abraham Lincoln and joined Sitting Bull's band at the Little Big Horn in June, 1876. At the Battle of Little Big Horn on Custer Hill on June 25, 1876, Rain-in-the-Face is said to have cut the heart out of Thomas Custer, and to have been the one to kill George A. Custer. Exceptionally rare signed cabinet photo "Rain in the face", 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" sepia, a U.S. Army photo credited to George E. Spencer showing the chief from the waist, up seated and in native garb, boldly signed at bottom in dark pencil, as was his custom. The image was most likely signed at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 when Rain in the Face was touring with Buffalo Bill and would oblige autograph seekers in exchange for a small fee. A few trivial foxed spots appear at upper-left but do very little to diminish this excellent item.
