Description:

478. RACIST STEREOVIEWS Aninteresting group of eight printed color steroviews of photographic images ofvarious "genre scenes" involving African-Americans. Most date from the 1890s andcome from several publishers, many with condescending captions. Images include"23. Watch Dat Nigger Kick", "Mrs. Newlywed's New Wench Cook","3. Dreaming of the Future", "Let Me Blow", "24. How De Debildo Dey Make a Bicycle", "Playing for High Stakes" and "Three of aKind". One of the cards showing two Black men and an ox cart bears a longcaption on the verso. After discussing the beauties of Florida it goes on tosay: "...But in the immediate vicinity of the palaces and parks of the richmay be found the shiftless, squalid negro with his primitive implements and hislack of ambition or indolence. There are twice as many farms operated by whitesas by colored farmers, and the average size tended by the latter is only 53acres as against 133.6 acres for those operated by white farmers". And whatconclusion are we supposed to draw from this nonsense? Light soiling, a fewother minor defects including a small and repaired chip to one of the corner, otherwise very good condition. $100 - 150
