Description:

RACHEL
(1821-1858) French actress unrivaled in classical roles, scoring her greatest triumph as Phédre; in Adrienne Lecouvreur, written for her by Legouve and Scribe, she attained immense success. Sadly, in 1855, while on tour in America her health gave way and she died of consumption prematurely at the age of 37. Extraordinary I.S.P. 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" sepia (including mat), a stunning oval full-length image of the great actress in a sumptuous gown, inscribed at bottom mat in French: "With all my heart...to you my dear friend Victor Sejour, Rachel, Paris, the 26th July 1855". To the left of the dedication is a small ownership handstamp of early twentieth-century autograph collector, Dr. Max. Thorek. A few slight foxed spots to mat, overall very good condition. Rare.
