Description:

Large grouping of material from R.A.F. Flight Officer Frederic L. Withers who spent most of his service attached to Czech squadrons in the R.A.F. Of the approx. 60 pieces in the collection, the most important is Withers' 'CONFIDENTIAL' heavily annotated approx. 100pp. legal folio book concerning the administration of an R.A.F. base. Withers apparently used this book during his administration or command of three squadrons, including 134 (Czech) Airfield, Ibsley, 122 Squadron which was commanded by a Czech, and 89 Squadron flying Beaufighters in the area of Crete and Sicily. This typed set of regulations, constantly updated by Withers, covered a multitude of administrative matters involved in operating a forward R.A.F. base. A very small sampling of topics includes selection of air crew; arrest and custody, chaplains, courts martial, forms, guards and sentries, identity cards, leave, mail, punishments, rations, signals, salvage, punishments, soap rationing, wills, and much more, all described in great detail within. Tabs on page edges refer to the various chapters noted in the index. Other material includes a page showing the varied color divisional signs used by 83 Group in the air campaign over Holland; a photo of 80 Squadron officers; rosettes from the liberation of Belgium; Allied invasion currency; 20+ photos from the liberation of Paris and elsewhere; pay documents and passes; broadsides; bar and restaurant receipts; and much more. A very nice collection.
