R.A.F. BATTLE OF BRITAIN COMBAT REPORT
R.A.F. Battle of Britain Combat Report, 1p. legal folio, [n.p.] July 10, 1940, prepared (but unsigned) by F/Lt. W. E. G. MEASURES (1916-1971), 74 Squadron, who encountered '100 plus' Dorniers and Messerschmitt escorts off the coast of Kent. In part: '...Scrambled to re-enforce air cover for convoy en route to Dover. Noted e/a in formation...100 strong with escorting 109 & 110 e/a, stacked above them flying at 12,000 feet. We went up to 13,000 ft and noted the e/a escorting the bombers had formed a cylinder above them. I then led the flt in a fast dive through the e/a and fired a long hurst into a 110, and its port engine began belching smoke. I then attacked a DO 17 firing bursts all along his topside and saw the rear canopy shatter. I was then attacked by pair of enemy fighters diving from each beam and from behind. My ammunition was by now expended and I was at the mercy of the enemy. I managed to evade then by weaving and various patches of cloud before I reached the coast. On emerging the fighters saw me and got on my tail. I thought my tine was up when two Hurricanes appeared and chased off the 109's. I made for base...'. Some marginal chips and a few stains. Awarded the AFC, Measures retired from the RAF on 23rd November 1957 as a Squadron Leader, retaining the rank of Wing Commander.
