Description:

RODERIC DALLAS DSO, DSC & Bar (1891 - 1918) Australian fighter ace of World War I, his total kills between 32 and 50. Dallas was also a squadron leader, an influential tactician and test pilot. His service spanned almost the entirety of World War I until his death in action. Captain J. P. R. Napier, Commanding No. 40 Squadron RAF confirming the victory. Rare war-date D.S., 1p. large 4to., [n.p.], May 15, 1918, the battle report for Dallas' 28th kill. The "Combats in the Air" form indicates that Dallas was on an "Offensive Patrol" at 7:15 AM "East of LA BASSEE" and at 5,000 feet when he encountered a "Two-seater Albatross. Salmon coloured Fuselage". He relates that he: "...stalked him through the low lying mist...and E.A. was taken completely by surprise. S.E. [Dallas' S.E. 5a] fired a half drum of Lewis and 50 rounds of Vickers in one long dive...Observer was not seen to return fire, E.A. at once dived steeply and was not seen to pull out...C Battery A.A. report that an E.A. two-seater was seen falling out of control...but was lost sight of in the mist...". Mounting strip on verso, right edge possibly trimmed, else near fine.
