Description:

QUILLBACK FASCHINENMESSER SHORT SWORD
Likely pre-unification or Imperial German short sword of the pattern commonly called ‘faschinenmesser' (fascine knife), 23.25 in. long overall, with an 18.25 in. single-edged ‘quill-back' blade. The blade shows draw marks, with notable dark areas of oxidation overall and a few small patches of active surface rust, and with two small nicks to the cutting edge near the tip. The hilt is comprised of a brass crossguard with S-shaped quillons and a single piece grip with diagonal grooves and birdshead-shaped pommel, with an extension at the end for the peened tang. The grip shows some spots of dark patination and a few patches of verdigris in the crevices. The sword is entirely unmarked, and is housed in a 19 in. long black leather scabbard with brass throat and chape. The stitching on the back of the scabbard has separated, with the throat detached and a split to the chape showing an old solder repair. Still in very good condition overall.
