Good grouping of documents concerning British Army surgeon and future Major Gen. George Somers McLoughlin (1867-1943), includes: VICTORIA (1819-1901) Queen of England, reigned during the Crimean and Boer Wars, abolished the East India Company, brought Disraeli to power as Prime Minister, and is considered the symbol of a unified British Empire, a partly-printed D.S., 1p. 8.25 x 13.25 in., Osborne, Jan. 27, 1899, admission of McLoughlin to the Distinguished Service Order, very boldly signed at upper-right above the official paper sea. Co-signed by HENRY CHARLES PETTY-FITZMAURICE (1845-1927) as 'Lansdowne', signing as Secretary of War. Folds and significant wrinkles. WITH: GEORGE V (1865-1936), King of England, son of Edward VII and husband of Mary of Teck who led England through the dark days of World War I and in the agreement with the Irish Free State, a partly-printed D.S., 2pp. 8.25 x 12.75 in., London, Feb. 18, 1915, naming McLoughlin to the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, signed at top right, also signed at conclusion by statesman JOHN ANDERSON (1882-1958), fine condition. WITH: an official document transmitting the Warrant and Seal of the Order, May 22, 1916; the 1911 statutes of the Order; a miniature enameled medal representative of the award issued by the Order; a 8.5 x 6.5 in. b/w photograph of a group of men in uniform, presumably including McLoughlin; a cabinet photograph of a man in British uniform, again presumed to be McLoughlin; and a cabinet photograph of Victoria as Queen by Alex Bassano, London. Overall very good, an excellent lot.
