Description:

QUEEN MARY OF TECK
(1867 - 1953) Queen of King George V. Extraordinary content A.L.S. "Mary" as Queen Mother on her Marlborough House letterhead with holograph initialed transmittal envelope, 3pp. 8vo., Sep. 29, 1938 to Dorothy, Marchioness of Cambridge. On the same day that British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Edouard Daladier signed the Munich Agreement agreeing to the partition of Czechoslovakia in return for Hitler's empty promise of peace, the Queen sets forth her thoughts on the matter. She opens her letter offering sympathy upon hearing of an injury to a member of her correspondent's family, stating that she is "much distressed" at the child's accident. She relates that she has spent several days at Badminton, and notes: "...[I] was sorry to have to come back on account of the crisis. One can only hope and pray that the meeting in Munich today will be successful and that negotiations may commence for a peaceful solution..." Fine condition. During the conflict, Mary resided away from London and often visited troops and factories, also directing the gathering of scrap material for the war effort. She was also known to offer lifts to soldiers she spotted on the roads. In 1942, her youngest surviving son, Prince George, Duke of Kent, was killed in an air crash while on active service. Mary finally returned to Marlborough House in June 1945, after the war in Europe had ended.
