Description:

(1665 - 1714) Queen of England and Ireland heavily influenced by the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, involved in the War of Spanish Succession, and oversaw the Act of Union with Scotland. ANNE ORDER TROOPS BE RAISED 'BY BEAT OF DRUM OR OTHERWISE' Fine content manuscript D.S. 'Anne R' in the first year of her reign, 1p. sm. folio, London, Jan. 18, 1703. As the War of Spanish Succession gains momentum, Anne orders troops to be raised to fill a regiment. In part: '...These are to authorize you by Beat of Drumm or otherwise to Raise so many volontiers as shall be wanting to Recruit and fill up the respective Companys of Our Regiment of Foot under Your Command for Our Service, Wherein all Magistrates, Justices of the Peace, Constables, and other Our Officers whom it may Concern are hereby required to be assisting unto you...' Signed by the queen at top, co-signed by WILLIAM BLATHWAYT (1649-1717) as Secretary of War at bottom. This order is noted at bottom as being directed to William North, 6th Baron North and 2nd Baron Grey (1678-1734), known as Lord North and Grey, an English soldier and Jacobite, and a peer for more than forty years. North and Grey was the first of his family to become a professional soldier, and he rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. His career faltered after the death of Queen Anne because he was known to be a Jacobite. After being arrested for his part in the Atterbury Plot, but released for lack of evidence, North and Grey took service in the army of King Philip V of Spain. Folds, else near fine condition, matted with a portrait.
