Description:

QUADRUPLE LYNCHING IN LOGAN COUNTY, KENTUCKY
Original mounted albumen photograph, 4 3/4" x 3 1/4" sepia, a macabre view of four African-American men with their hands bound behind their backs, hanged from the same cedar tree, with several other black individuals visible in the background. The paper backing bears blue ink inscriptions unrelated to the scene, and the photograph itself shows numerous creases, chips, and stains, none of which detract from the impact of the image. Research shows that this photo depicts a lynching which took place on Aug. 1, 1908 in Logan County, Kentucky. The four men depicted, Joseph Riley, Virgil Jones, Robert Jones and Thomas Jones, were sharecroppers who were placed under arrest for expressing discontent for the farmers for whom they worked, and who had expressed support for Rufus Browder, a friend and fellow sharecropper who had shot and killed his employer, James Cunningham, in self defense. The four men were forcibly taken from the jail by a mob of one hundred men, who lynched them from the "old Proctor lynching tree", a cedar which had been the site of five previous hangings. The mob pinned a note to the shirt of one victim, reading: "Let this be a warning to you niggers to let white people alone or you will go the same way". A shocking relic documenting the long-festering racial tensions which still can be felt in this country.
