"Giacomo " 2pp. 4to., Milan, "Sunday ", n.d., in Italian to Riccardo, a longing, emotional letter apparently referring to his affair with soprano Rose Ader and her recent departure from him for the time being, in part: "...How bad it felt to leave and come here last night - I can't tell you the same thing about being far away - you understand. Milan is absolutely awful. Would you tell me when she is leaving? And how many days she is staying in Venice? Would like to know exactly. Would you also ask her if it's possible for her to go via Milan? Well, I really burn to see her again. A good soul has come into my life, and I believe that you must understand. I was looking for nothing else in the world, but the language! That's where the trouble is, the stumbling block, the gulf, the center of my unhappiness, why I can't make myself understood.
