Description:

Rare Imperial German enlisted man's shako, constructed of lacquered black leather, bearing a metal "wappen", or helmet plate, at the front, depicting the coat of arms of the German state of Prussia, a crowned Imperial eagle clutching a scepter and orb, with the motto "Mit Gott Fur Koenig Und Vaterland" ("With God for King and Fatherland"), on a banner across the breast, over the initials "FR". The helmet features vent holes on either side of the crown, with a serrated Imperial German cockade affixed to the right rosette; no cockade is present on the left-hand side. The interior features an eight-fingered brown leather liner with leather adjustment cord. Most interestingly, the interior of the crown is stamped "Jagdst. 19", for "Jagdstaffel 19", a fighter squadron of the "Luftskreitekraft", the air arm of the Imperial German Army. The interior is also stamped with the date "1918" and the size "59", with an indistinct oval maker's stamp. The liner shows some wear and slight flaking, while the exterior lacquer shows some crackling, else very good. The shako is housed in a black fabric-covered case, possibly not original to the helmet, bearing the inscription "Lrn. d. S. 6. Hugel" and the initials "W.C.K." inside the lid. The leather securing straps for this case are broken, else very good.
