Description:

Proof impression engraving: 'The Duke of Wellington, As He appeared on the Day of Public Thanksgiving, At St. Pauls...[Receiving] The Sword of England...', 21.5 x 30.25 in., engraved by William Bromley, published by R. Bowyer, June 18, 1818. The gravure shows Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, standing whole-length under an arch, wearing a military uniform with sash, chain, and star, and holding the sword aloft in his right hand. Notably toned and soiled, with multiple tears to the edges, and a very large dampstain throughout the lower one-third of the portrait. The verso bears some repairs, yet still in rough shape overall. Estimated accordingly. This engraving was published after Thomas Lawrence's portrait of 1814, and by this time, Wellesley was Commander-in-Chief of the army fighting the Peninsular War and had enjoyed a much-celebrated victory at Vittoria the previous year. His final defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo (1815) was however yet to come.
