Description:

PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH
(1921 - 2021) Distinguished (and outspoken) member of the British royal family as the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. Manuscript D.S. 'Philip' as Commanding Officer, HMS MAGPIE, 2pp. 8vo., [n.p., but likely while in drydock], July, 1951, his approval of engine room log entries certifying various repairs. Light toning, else very good. During World War II, Philip did service with the Royal Navy throughout the Mediterranean. On 16 July 1950, he was promoted to lieutenant commander and given command of the frigate HMS MAGPIE, most likely again in the Mediterranean. MAGPIE was commissioned in 1942 and spent the war years in anti-submarine convoy duty, first in the North Atlantic, then on Arctic convoys. Philip, who showed an enormous amount of pride in his service in the Royal Navy, commanded the ship from 1950 to 1952.
