Description:

Impressive inlaid oak document box presented to de facto U.S. Ambassador to Austria John G. Erhardt during his service in that country immediately after the war until 1948. The 16 x 11 in. oak veneer box is 5 in. deep with curved sides and a hinged top lid. The lid is inlaid with different other woods, including a burled walnut and a lighter wood, possibly ash. At center is the seal of the city of Vienna, the two-headed eagle with crown and shield. Beneath appears a scroll with the year '1946' and 'WIEN' at center. The entirety is surrounded by a scroll border. The interior of the box appears to be a finished pine. In overall very good to fine condition. JOHN G. ERHARDT (1889-1951) served as Consul in Hamburg and Consul in London under Ambassador Joseph Kennedy. During the war, he was in a high-level State Department position in Washington, where he was involved in the planning of the surrender of Germany and occupation of Germany and Austria. After the war, he served as de facto Ambassador to Austria and as political adviser to Gen. Mark Clark, who led the American occupation military forces in Austria.
