Description:

Very rare book: 'Warschau unter deutscher Herrschaft: Deutsche Aufbauarbeit im Distrikt Warschau' ('Warsaw under German Rule: Rebuilding of the Warsaw District by the Germans') by head of the Warsaw district in German-occupied Poland Friedrich Gollert (Poland: Burgverlag Krakau), 1942. 310pp. 8vo., with green boards, impressed national eagle on front cover, and gilt title on spine. The front pastedown bears a sticker with a handwritten congratulations to the 'Res. IIC1', possibly an SA unit, including the place and date: 'Warschau...4.12.1942'. Beneath this has been signed by eleven unidentified SA members, presumed involved with Warsaw's occupation and worthy of further research. The book is a Nazi propaganda publication on the 'rebuilding' of Warsaw and the 'improvements' of the district under German rule, including a 12-page section with text and illustrations on the Warsaw Ghetto. The author describes how after the takeover of the city, Jews were found in filthy living conditions rampant with infectious diseases. In order to 'protect' the rest of the population and the German army, German authorities were 'forced' to create a separate 'Wohnbezirk' ('living district') for Jews to keep them from spreading diseases. The Warsaw Ghetto was established in October / November 1940 with over 400,000 Jews residing in an area of 1.3 square miles. Fine condition.
