Description:

PRESENTATION COPY OF 1936 OLYMPIC GAMES BOOK GIVEN TO ADOLF HITLER - FROM HIS LIBRARY AT THE REICHS CHANCELLERY
A superb, specially-bound book inscribed to Adolf Hitler by three of Germany's top Olympics officials. The volume is "So Kämpfte und Siegte die Jugend der Welt" ("So Fought and Won the Youth of the World") [Munich: Verlag Knorr & Hirth], 1936. 160pp. 8vo., in black finely-pebbled leather with the cover bearing a gilt image of Olympic rings, the Brandenburg Gate and laurel leaves, and the spine bearing the gilt title. Within are multiple photo illustrations and results. The half-title page is inscribed: "Our Fuhrer Adolf Hitler, the patron and great leader of the Olympic Games Berlin 1936" and is signed by the authors, FRANZ MILLER (Olympic starter), BARON PETER ALEXANDER VON LE FORT (General Secretary of the Organization Commitee of the 1936 Winter Olympic Games), and DR. HERMANN HARTSTER (Chief Press Officer of the Winter Games). Edge of spine is scuffed a bit, else fine. Interestingly, page 42 bears a photograph of Jesse Owens and his fellow sprinters captioned: "The fastest 4 x 100 m relay team in the world" while a later photo shows German athletes offering a "Hitler salute". Our consignor's father was the chief of staff, American Headquarters, Berlin Air Command from June to August, 1945. During this period, he had the opportunity to "liberate" several volumes from the Reichschancellery, specifically Hitler's offices and those adjoining. This example is one of those volumes. With consignor's notarized letter of provenance.
