Description:

PRESENTATION CIGARETTE CASE TO A "KING TIGER" PANZER DRIVER
Excellent late-war cigarette case, 3 3/4" x 3 1/4", engraved with a floral pattern on the lid and a stippled pattern on the back, and bearing the engraved initials "G H" at the center of the lid. The interior of the case bears a detailed and very interesting presentation inscription, in full: "Unserem Freund u. Fahrer unseres Konigstigers Gustav Horn, Erfolgreich von Ostpreussen durch Polen-Warschau, der Heimat entgegen Weihnachten 1944 die Kameraden div 2./Fallsch. Pz. Pi. Bn. ''H.G.''" ("Our fiend and driver of our King Tiger Gustav Horn, successful from East Prussia through Poland-Warsaw, towards the homeland Christmas 1944, the comrades of Division 2./ Fallschirmjager Panzer Pioneer battalion ''Hermann Goering''"). This division was formed at the end of September 1944 in the vicinity of Radom, and was immediately engaged in attempting to halt the Soviet advance in the Kurland Pocket and East Prussia. The Soviet offensive caused the division to be trapped in the Heiligenbeil Pocket, and forced them to be evacuated by sea to Swindemunde. Upon landing, they were engaged in defending the Oder-Neisse line, and were eventually sent to Silesia. After being pushed back to Dresden, the remnants of the division surrendered to the Soviets at the beginning of May 1945. Included with the case is a short service record for Gustav Horn, confirming his service with the division. The case shows slight tarnish, with some slight deformation to the case lips, else very good.
