Description:

A fine Third Reich presentation piece, an Italian cigarette box, 9 ¾" x 6" x 2 ¼", crafted from olive wood, with a lid bearing an applied silver label in Italian, "Sigarette" (""Cigarettes"). Affixed to the edge of the lid is a silver presentation plaque, engraved "Comandante SS-Obergruppenfuhrer Karl Wolff". Both silver pieces are marked with the silver content "800" and a tiny hallmark. The lid opens to reveal a hinged three-tiered rack filled with filterless cigarettes (added latterly for display), next to a shallow trough for matches and a striking surface. The interior of the lid bears the foil label of a jeweler and goldsmith in Pescara, Italy. The "Sigarette" plaque on the lid is slightly loose, and one screw is missing from the hinge, with some scuffs to the front edge, else very good. KARL WOLFF (1906-1975) served as liaison officer for Himmler with Hitler, and as German military governor of Northern Italy, in which capacity he secretly negotiated with future Director of Central Intelligence Alan Dulles to surrender German forces in Italy. The coastal city of Pescara formed the Adriatic terminus of the "Winter Line" of German and Italian military fortifications which protected the western portion of Italy from Allied advances.
