PREPARING TO MOVE WHEREVER GRANT "THE TYCOON" MAY ORDER
War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo. by 1st Lt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], Co. B, 3rd New York Cavalry, "In the field near Point of Rocks, Va.", June 20, 1864, in part: "…heard fighting for the past forty eight hours-constant skirmishing and that too on a very large scale. Our advance line is within a stones throw of Peterburgh-but the city is not ours yet. The rebs are in the last ditch, fighting for dear life. Every street in Petersburg is fortified, every house and every tree top is filled with sharpshooters. We are having a great many wounded all the time. If a man goes near enough and shows his head above a rifle pit., log or whatever…away goes a dozen shoot for him from the 'Johnnie Rebs'…our men do the same when they have a chance. Gen. Grant has nearly all his family here now from the army of the Potomack…our regiment is ready at all hours, to move at a moments notice wherever the Tycoon (Gen. Grant) may order…many of my most intimate friends have been killed, wounded and taken prisoner…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
