EZRA POUND (1885-1972) American poet, editor and critic and a major influence on Joyce, Eliot, Hemingway and Frost. Unusual, aggressive, A.L.S. signed with initials "E.P. ", 1p. 4to., [Washington, Dec. 21, 1954]., to Caedmon Records, whose recordings of authors reading their own works included two volumes of his poetry. In part: "...IF the Caedmon are curious & IF they wear alluding to Winterbottom story, perhaps they also know an American classic ending in "& the fuzzy one was DEElicious'. In any case the condition was 'may I compare thee to a summer's day' poifik ". Of course, Pound quotes Shakespeare's Sonnet XVIII, but the remainder of his diatribe remains illusive. Along with an equally cryptic T.L., unsigned, 1p. 4to., on a pink sheet with holograph emendations, and containing Pound's idiosyncratic diction: "pending PoETry periodical/etc would CAEDMON be interested in filling up dics of troubadour E.P. reading with some Villon/That is to say if Raymonde Collingnon ** cd/ha tape record in London some of the E.P. Villon, and perhaps some of the Yvette Guilbert collection of old french songs. with our without translations. Diseuse/dire un chancon [sic]/ where the words count I don't know that the big firms have some much in this line...** Vide final 'Medallion' in Mauberly ". Undoubtedly typed by Pound himself, who gave many of his letters and poems an avant-garde, Dada-ist look. The note refers to Pound's poem Hugh Selwyn Mauberly, which he recorded for Caedmon. Apparently, he also wanted to record some of the work of his hero, 15th century French poet and thief Francois Villon and supplement it with recordings by Chanteuse Guilbert. The A.L.S. bears original holograph envelope. Boldly written in his sprawling hand, chipping and a couple of tears to edges and folds, otherwise very good. The T.L. is very good. An unusual lot, certainly worthy of further research. Two pieces. $500-600
