POSTCARDS DEPICTING DESTRUCTION AT VERDUN (27)
Fine group of twenty-seven French postcards, each 5.5 x 3.5 in b/w, all depicting scenes of the destruction wrought on the city of Verdun, the site of some of the fiercest fighting on the Western Front. The lot includes eight real photo postcards produced by ‘L. C. H., Vise Paris' as part of the series ‘La Guerre 1914-18', with an additional nineteen lithograph examples from the series ‘La Grande Guerre 1914-18' (‘The Great War 1914-18'), produced by ‘Phot-Express – Vise Paris', backstamped ‘Phototypie Baudiniere Paris'. RPPC images include views of the ruined cathedral, seminary, town hall and railroad station of Verdun, while litho images include the effects of artillery on the Douaumont and Vaux Fortresses, the aforementioned cathedral and seminary, ruined bridges, and street views showing the widespread demolition of the city. The litho examples are perforated at left edge were detached from another sheet, and some examples show small tears to the edges or bumps to the corners, else very good overall.

Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
