Description:

POLISH PRISONER IN LITZMANNSTADT SEEKS RELEASE
Grouping of nine documents relating to the imprisonment of Edmund Gorecki, a Polish prisoner held at Litzmannstadt. The first document, 1p. 4to., Litzmannstadt, Sep. 14, 1940 is issued by a police official in response to a plea from Gorecki's wife (on verso) and lists Gorecki's property. It states that his release from captivity 'seems necessary' to attend to his farm. A September, 1940 form letter sets forth rules for the release of prisoners, which seems to make the man's release forbidden. The third document is an Oct. 2, 1940 German Red Cross form which Adela failed to complete, seeking to have her husband released on humanitarian grounds. There follows a Nov. 1, 1940 signed document from the 'District Farm Litzmannstadt': '...I cannot support the release of the Polish prisoner of war...due to economic necessity...' On October 26, 1940, an unknown party representing Gurecki attempts another tack, noting that Gurecki was born in Rzgow and asks that his ethnicity be officially determined, apparently hoping he will be determined an ethnic German. On the same day, the same representative mentions Adela Gurecki's plight and asks that her husband be released to work his farm 'in the German economic interest.' On Nov. 5, 1940, Adela is advised that her husband's release 'is not justified. I am therefore unable to comply...' On Feb. 21, 1921 a report from an unknown entity, possibly the Gestapo, sets forth basics on Gurecki and his capture, states that there are no negatives regarding him, and states that his neighbors considered him a 'hard-working Pole'. A March 3, 1941 letter from the 'Deutsche Volksliste' forwards the previous report to the Litzmannstadt city offices. Overall very good. Gurecki's ultimate fate is unknown, though few Polish POWs survived the war.
