Description:

Partly-printed D.S., 3pp. 8vo., Zdunska Wola, July 9, 1941, a German 'ausweis' ('identity card') issued to Joseph Fitze, born Jan. 10, 1900, identifying him as an 'arbeiter' ('worker') within the Polish city of Zdunska Wola, cancelled at the bottom-left by the district administrator of the district branch 'Bosnian people's list' of Sieradz. The second interior page bears his signature and affixed portrait. Worn from age and use, though content still legible. Sieradz was a Polish open ghetto established on March 1, 1940, whose population stood at 1,000-1,400. In 1942, during the six months before the final destruction of the ghetto, persecutions intensified; the Jews were now ordered to appear at German army headquarters twice a day, where they were carefully counted to make sure that no Jew had dared to run away from the ghetto. Fitz near certainly would have presented this ID during those checks. The final expulsion of the remaining Jews of Sieradz took place from August 24-27, 1942, where 184-190 young, healthy men, and some craftsmen were transported to Lodz Ghetto; the rest were sent to the extermination camp at Chelmno, or killed on the spot. Fitze's fate is unknown.
