PLUNDERING ANTWERP'S JEWISH DIAMOND DEALERS
Incredible document in which a senior military commander in Belgium and North-France pays an accountant for his services rendered in Germany's efforts to confiscate diamonds from Jewish merchants in Belgium. The document, on the commander's letterhead, is sent to the Bruesseler Treuhandgesellschaft SPRL (Brussels Trust Company), a financial trust created by the Nazis for the seizure, management, and disposal of Jewish and enemy property and financial assets in Belgium, 1p. 8vo., Brussels, Mar. 29, 1943. In part: "Regarding: Liquidation of Jewish diamond dealer companies in Antwerp, William Frensel...I request to pay Dr. [Eberhard] Ammermann, business trustee, an advance against his fees in the amount of RM 513.55.". Receiving stamp with notation that the amount was paid by check number 95046 and signed for by Dr. Ammerman. A pencil note shows that the money was held in an account with Bank Paribas. William Frensel (d. 1944) was the "German trustee for diamond matters". Charged primarily with confiscating diamonds from Jews and "non-Aryans" living in occupied Belgium, Frensel was also involved in confiscating other property from Jews Eberhardt Ammerman was Frensel's accountant and eventual successor. Of course, Antwerp is the largest diamond trading center in the world.
